Islamic Academy signs 25-year lease, Page 3

Ten years ago, Methuen officials welcomed the Islamic Academy for Peace, a new private school that leased and fixed up the city’s vacant Oakland Avenue School building. It’s a relationship that will continue for many years to come. Last month, school trustees inked a 25-year lease with the city. It’s a deal that the school’s educators and city leaders are very happy about. “It gives us continuity,” said Bashir El- Darwish, the school’s principal and one of its founders. “We’re happy about the extension.” The academy, one of only 10 of its kind in New England, offers an educational program based on core Islamic values and traditions and provides a nurturing environment where youngsters can grow to their full potential. “We strive for excellence,” said Mr. Bashir. In addition to traditional subjects, such as reading, mathematics, social studies and science, Arabic is taught as a second language and  students are taught Islamic faith and how to be a good citizen.
